BOSTON, Mass.—Last week, Jonathan Mermin, MD, MPH was named the new Director at the National Center for HIV/AIDS, Viral Hepatitis, STD, and TB Prevention (NCHHSTP) at the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Fenway Health congratulated Dr. Mermin and looks forward to continuing to work with him to reduce new HIV infections and promote sexual health for all.
With a budget of approximately $1 billion, NCHHSTP is one of the larger centers at CDC. The Center maximizes public health and safety nationally and internationally through the elimination, prevention, and control of disease, disability, and death caused by HIV/AIDS, viral hepatitis, STDs and TB. He has overseen the expeditious issuance of guidance for the use of pre-exposure prophylaxis to reduce HIV infections for key populations. Fenway’s Sidney Borum Jr. Health Center cares for youth and young adults ages 12 to 29 who may not feel comfortable going anywhere else, including those who are LGBT or just figuring things out; homeless or living on the streets; struggling with substance use or abuse; sex workers; or living with HIV/AIDS.
