BOSTON, Mass.—Last week, Jonathan Mermin, MD, MPH was named the new Director at the National Center for HIV/AIDS, Viral Hepatitis, STD, and TB Prevention (NCHHSTP) at the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Fenway Health congratulated Dr. Mermin and looks forward to continuing to work with him to reduce new HIV infections and promote sexual health for all.

“Fenway Health is thrilled to welcome Dr. Mermin to this new position,” said Stephen Boswell, MD, President & CEO of Fenway Health. “During his time as Director of the Division of HIV Prevention, Dr. Mermin increased attention and shifted funding to gay and bisexual men in the HIV epidemic, both in the U.S. and globally. He also launched the gathering of gender identity data on those newly diagnosed with HIV, and produced an analysis of HIV infection rates and risk behaviors among older adults. He has overseen the expeditious issuance of guidance for the use of pre-exposure prophylaxis to reduce HIV infections for key populations. We look forward to continuing to work with Dr. Mermin to prioritize vulnerable populations in the epidemic and incorporate new prevention paradigms into our efforts.”
Dr. Kenneth Mayer, Co-Chair of The Fenway Institute and Medical Research Director of Fenway Health commented, “The selection of Dr. Mermin is a brilliant choice and bodes well for the enactment of the President’s National AIDS Strategy. Dr. Mermin distinguished himself in his work on HIV treatment and prevention scale up in Uganda and Kenya, and has brought a new vision and renewed sense of purpose to his team at CDC. We anticipate new and close collaborative efforts with the CDC’s HIV/AIDS Program under his leadership.” [pullquote]“During his time as Director of the Division of HIV Prevention, Dr. Mermin increased attention and shifted funding to gay and bisexual men in the HIV epidemic, both in the U.S. and globally.” —Stephen Boswell, MD, President & CEO of Fenway Health[/pullquote]
