Boston, Mass. — The Hispanic Black Gay Coalition (HBGC) will host author Yolo Akili for a discussion, reading and signing of his new book “Dear Universe: Letters Of Affirmation & Empowerment For All of Us” (Micheal Todd Books, 2013) on Sunday, July 14th from 3:00 – 5:00 p.m. at Club Café located at 209 Columbus Ave in Boston. The event is part of HBGC’s book club program, which meets on a quarterly basis to discuss literary works by LGBTQ authors of color. The event is free and open to the public.
“Dear Universe” is a collection of spiritual affirmations with a southern twist that infuses humor into both everyday and social justice scenarios to promote emotional and spiritual health. Shortly after its release, Akili was named a “Health Hero” by BET.com. The book has also received rave reviews from The Feminist Wire & Mused Magazine. “Being a part of HBGC’s work is a great honor. I wrote this book to help everyone, especially those who are taught by society that they don’t fit in or that they are less valuable…. But it’s always been my hope that this book reaches the Black and Hispanic LGBTQ community particularly. Working with HBGC, I know that will happen,” Akili states.
