BOSTON, Mass. – This afternoon, activists gathered in front of the campaign headquarters of the Republican nominee for President, Mitt Romney, to voice their disappointment with his record on women.
Inspired by Romney’s notorious “binders full of women” comment in the second Presidential debate, these activists delivered armfuls of binders featuring Romney’s likeness and containing an extensive research document laying out Romney’s disappointing, anti-woman record on a variety of issues including reproductive rights, health care, workplace equality, and judicial appointments.BOSTON – This afternoon, activists gathered in front of the campaign headquarters of the Republican nominee for President, Mitt Romney, to voice their disappointment with his record on women.
“Let’s be clear about Mitt Romney’s record on women,” asserted State Representative Marty Walz (8th Suffolk). “His position on contraception is downright extreme. His position on equal pay is that we’re on our own; but, hey, he’ll give women time at the end of the day to get home and cook dinner. His record on appointing women judges is that he’ll only do it when forced to do so. The bottom line is that Romney’s record on women feels better suited for the 1950’s than the 21st century.”
“The Mass. NOW PAC is deeply concerned about Mitt Romney’s record on women’s issues,” noted Christina M. Knowles, Chair of the Massachusetts Chapter of the National Organization for Women’s Political Action Committee. “During his time as Governor, he repeatedly and systematically took steps to chip away at women’s health, work, and overall equality. Let there be no mistake that women in the Commonwealth and around the country should be very worried about what their lives will look like if Romney is elected. Romney may be trying to play to voters as a moderate, but his record on women’s issues is abysmal, disheartening, and, quite frankly, scary.”
“There are four Supreme Court Justices currently in their seventies,” reminded Mathew Helman, Communications Director of ProgressMass. “Whoever is President for the next four years might nominate multiple new Justices. It may only take a one-Justice swing before Roe v. Wade is overturned. Mitt Romney said that it would be ‘wonderful’ if Roe was overturned and that he would be ‘delighted’ to sign a bill imposing a federal ban on all abortions. This should deeply concern all women and all supporters of reproductive rights.”
