BOSTON, Mass.—Fenway Health is proud to announce the addition of obstetrical care services, now available at the 1340 Boylston Street location. As a formal partnership with the Department of Obstetrics & Gynecology at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center (BIDMC), the new service will be able to accommodate the growing number of Fenway patients starting and expanding their families.

Led by Sandra Mason, MD, the OB team will provide prenatal care for Fenway Health patients in all stages of pregnancy. Dr. Mason, who is also on staff at BIDMC, has provided gynecology care to patients at Fenway for over a decade, and will now support pregnant patients alongside Nurse Practitioner Erin Gately and Team Nurse Carlye Atkinson. [pullquote]Fenway was one of the first sites in the nation to offer AI services to lesbians and single mothers. According to Jennifer Potter, MD, Fenway’s Director of Women’s Health, this new clinical program greatly improves the scope and quality of care for the Fenway Health community.

“It is so exciting to finally offer OB services to Boston’s LGBT community and all people in our neighborhoods,” Dr. Potter said. ”Being able to offer prenatal care, in addition to our pioneering Alternative Insemination (AI) program, ensures that we are doing everything we can to care for our patients and their loved ones throughout all aspects of their lives, including pregnancy.”

Fenway was one of the first sites in the nation to offer AI services to lesbians and single mothers. Since 1983, the AI Program has offered high-quality medical alternatives for achieving conception and supporting families through networking, education, and advocacy. Offering obstetrics is a natural extension of the AI Program, and is part of Fenway’s award-winning Women’s Health program.

“By starting this obstetrical service, Fenway moves closer to fulfilling its mission of providing high quality health care that is tailored to the needs of both the New England LGBT community and the people in our neighborhoods who depend on us,” said Alex Gonzalez, MD, MPH, Fenway’s Medical Director. “I think this addition also galvanizes Fenway Health’s commitment of providing compassionate care to women and families, and it represents one of the many exciting ways in which the Fenway family will be growing over the next decade.”

Dr. Mason has been practicing obstetrics for over 14 years. After graduating from Harvard Medical School, she started her obstetrics career at BIDMC, and she is Board Certified by the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology. During her career, Dr. Mason estimates that she has delivered approximately 3,000 babies.

“I have been providing OB/GYN services to our Fenway patients for the past 14 years in my BIDMC practice, and now we are very excited to serve them directly at Fenway Health,” Dr. Mason said. ”This is another example of outstanding care at Fenway Health and BIDMC, where our patients’ babies will be born.”
