Healey’s game-changing contributions at the helm of two prominent divisions of the attorney general’s office – the Business & Labor and Public Protection & Advocacy Bureaus ─ helped make the office a state and national powerhouse.
Healey was the architect of the of the Commonwealth’s landmark challenge to the Defense of Marriage Act and led the winning argument of the nation’s first lawsuit striking it down. She and her team filed briefs in the Supreme Court marriage equality cases that declared DOMA unconstitutional and overturned California’s marriage ban and was instrumental in securing statewide non-discrimination protections in Massachusetts for transgender people in employment, housing, education, credit and hate crimes.
She has worked extensively to combat bullying in the Commonwealth’s schools, to train law enforcement on best practices in preventing hate crimes, and to ensure women continue to have access to services vital to their reproductive health, and she has championed legal cases involving fair lending and housing practices. In helping to create and lead the state’s first-ever HomeCorps program, she provided assistance to the state’s military service members and veterans and assisted families facing foreclosures. Healey also worked as a litigator for a prominent Boston law firm and was a Special Assistant District Attorney in the Middlesex District Attorney’s Office.
“Our Commonwealth needs Maura as our next chief law enforcement officer improving lives and making history,” continued Coredini. “MassEquality’s advocacy on behalf of the LGBTQ community has made Massachusetts a more equal place to live, work and grow a business and I am so pleased to have their endorsement,” said Healey. “Their fight has been my fight. As Attorney General, I will continue to partner with MassEquality and other great civil rights organizations to end discrimination and promote opportunity across Massachusetts.”
If elected, Healey would make history as the first openly gay attorney general in the United States.
MassEquality is the leading statewide grassroots advocacy organization working to ensure that everyone across Massachusetts can thrive from cradle to grave without discrimination and oppression based on sexual orientation, gender identity, or gender expression.
