With all the bitchy queens out there, why did it take so long for someone to create a gay fighting game?
“The idea arose from banter between friends discussing our mutual love for 90’s fighting games,” says Michael Patrick, Gay Fighter Supreme’s creator. “The characters are all influenced by dated jokes, pop culture icons, and camp. We wanted it to be like a pride parade gone rogue.”
The game is intended to be irreverent, satirical, fun spirited and ironic. Co-creator Melchor Cardenas says, “Anyone who mistakenly views the game as offensive or feels it perpetuates gay stereotypes is missing the point. It’s pure satire. We don’t mean to offend anyone. If it does offend someone, we hope it inspires them to create a fun queer themed game of their own.” [pullquote]Co-creator Melchor Cardenas says, “Anyone who mistakenly views the game as offensive or feels it perpetuates gay stereotypes is missing the point. In Gay Fighter Supreme, ten LGBT fighters are competing to win the title of Gay Fight champion. There’s drag queen Carrie Cupcake, Gogo boy Gary, lesbian Sappho Ethridge, twink Timmy Spears, and more – all competing to win the title of Gay Fight champion. Little do the fighters know, there is something ominous about the competition.
The League of Oppressive Self-Righteous Zealots (LOSRZ) are actually behind the tournament. They have created it for two reasons: to make the LGBT community destroy itself and to brainwash the winner to carry out the League’s nefarious plans.
“We designed the game play to be fun and entertaining yet easy and understandable so that non-gamers can play”, continues Cardenas.
Game play is simple. At the bottom of the screen are six rainbow buttons that emit white lights. To execute an attack, the player must quickly tap the white light. Missing a light allows the opposing character to attack. The game gets more challenging as lights move more rapidly, become multi-colored, or even falling from the ceiling. New characters and special attacks unlock as the player continues to defeat the opposition.
There are twelve levels in all. The final three characters that must be defeated to win the game are the LOSRZ, including the evil Anne Paylin who bares a striking resemblance to a former real-life Vice Presidential candidate. Like Palin, Paylin is a notorious politician whose weapon of choice is an American flag which she uses to harpoon her most prized prey: gays! To preserve the tongue in cheek nature of the game, no blood or gore is ever seen in Gay Fighter Supreme, only rainbows and unicorns.
“The message I would take from the game is that the LGBT family shouldn’t fight among each other,” concludes Patrick. “There are larger enemies afoot!”
Patrick and Cardenas are releasing weekly comics and videos featuring backstories of the fighters in a series called “Handsome Women Explain It All”. In the comedic series, Patrick and Cardenas also reveal their own personal stories that inspired the development of the characters.
